England - West of Windsor

Zu diesem Kurs

Windsor Castle, Winchester Cathedral, the White Horse... People who fly to Heathrow Airport in London mostly then travel on into London. But Heathrow is also the gateway to one of the most interesting and historic areas of England, the area we will look at in this illustrated talk in easy English. Starting in Windsor, close to the airport, we will then move on to the university town of Oxford, Shakespeare's town Stratford-upon-Avon, the Cotswolds with so many lovely villages and Bath with its Roman remains and its Regency buildings. The counties of Wiltshire and Berkshire have more prehistoric sites (Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age) than anywhere else in the country; these include Stonehenge, Maiden Castle and the Cerne Abbas Giant. There are also a number of ancient cathedrals such as Salisbury and Wells. This is an area with many famous great houses, some dating back to Elizabethan times, and usually with fine gardens to visit. Stourhead and Blenheim Palace are just two of them. This is England as shown in many films, for example those of Jane Austen's novels, or in such TV productions as "Inspector Barnaby" and it has a long and interesting history. There are so many interesting places to visit, it is impossible to list them all, but we will look at a number of the most interesting; they may give you some ideas for your next visit to Britain.
